Research & Development

Since Liquefied Petroleum Gas was introduced in North America as a commercial fuel gas energy source shortly before the first World War, the hazards associated with its use have proven confusing to many especially to consumers, insurers and public safety regulators not familiar with its technology.  Research specifically on safety played a major role in developing new appliances.

The properties of LP gas require that a high degree of technical sophistication be applied in the design and use of the equipment in which LP gas is stored and handled.

LP gas producers and laboratories are continually developing new appliances and additional uses that must be analysed and researched. They subsequently also develop safety standards in which to operate.

Any new development should be presented to the South African Bureau of Standards or to the Liquefied Petroleum Gas Safety Association for testing and evaluating.

LPG Safety Association in South Africa

The Liquefied Petroleum Gas Safety Association of Southern Africa is the organisation representing many companies that are involved in the refining, distribution and retailing of LP gas and gas appliances.

This organisation is dedicated to the safe use of LP gas across Southern Africa: domestically, commercially and industrially.

The LPGASA works very closely with the various fire departments in controlling and approving all LP gas sites. It also consults with the SABS concerning all Standards and Codes of Practice pertaining to the industry.
