Tribology

Lubrication Engineering

Tribology is defined: "as the science and technology of interacting surfaces moving in relation to each other and associated problems".

It all sounds very involved, but in the end it is actually very simple. Tribology deals with the effective lubrication of machine components and plant parts to ensure minimum friction in the moving parts and provide reliable functioning.

Lubrication: an essential stage for the design process of machinery

The designer of machinery must always, even at the design and development stage bear in mind the lubrication needs to be met for long-term service and reliability. The end-user needs to be satisfied that he will have fault and damage free operation of the machinery throughout its designed service life.

For the tribological design of lubricated machines components, the lubricant is an integral part of the design and development process. The life of the machine designed, will be determined by the effective lubrication functionality in combating friction and wear.

Save money by applying tribology throughout the process

Two measures are required to achieve this:

  • The dissemination of tribology and lubrication know-how, and
  • The circulation of informative lubricant properties and advice of which values affect particular aspects of behaviour.

Tribological guidelines are very necessary in any machinery design since hardly any machinery or components can be operated without measures to minimise friction and wear, while lubricants are also used in metalworking and operating rockets and satellites in space.

The application of the latest tribology technology greatly reduces monetary losses if the latest technical and scientific information in Tribology and Lubrication engineering is applied.
