Zimele and Patience Mavata made a decision to serve the KwaNyuswa community in the Valley of a Thousand Hills, and Ikhayalobomi was born in 2000. The Care Centre offers free accommodation, medication and free home-based caring for people living with HIV/AIDS. Families of patients are also offered free home-based care. In line with addressing the country's social imperatives, TOTAL South Africa supports the Care Centre that serves a community of over 375 000 people. Staffed with over 100 volunteers who whilst carrying out their volunteering work also receive ongoing training in basic nursing and counselling skills, the project is growing in leaps and bounds.
TOTAL South Africa is well aware of the devastating impact that Aids has on the country's workforce. For this reason the company's CSI division supports initiatives that aim to combat or ease the suffering of people living with the illness. TOTAL has been supporting Ikhayalobomi Care Centre for people living with HIV/Aids since 2005. CSI Manager Zakithi Zama introduced the project to TOTAL and has been passionately driving it for the past two years.
The intervention is in line with TOTAL's CSI policy, which aims to address South Africa's social imperatives. Ikhayalobomi Care Centre is located in an area of 300 square kilometres in KwaNyuswa near Hillcrest.
TOTAL's donation of R400 000 to Ikhayalobomi Care Centre went a long way in making 2006 a successful year for the Care Centre. The company's support enabled the centre to care for 213 inpatients and 355 outpatients. The support also enabled the Care Centre to provide orphaned and needy children with uniforms and food. 60 families benefited from the monthly food distribution. “This project has created a caring environment for people living with Aids. It has given them a new purpose and sense of dignity”, said CSI Manager Zakithi Zama.
