TOTAL South Africa, which in the recent years has sponsored elite Premier Soccer League clubs such as Kaizer Chiefs, Moroka Swallows and Ajax Cape Town, has shifted its soccer sponsorship focus from the professional ranks to an area many people consider to be of critical importance – development.
One of the communities that have benefited from the company's new soccer sponsorship approach is Osizweni. The annual Osizweni TOTAL Soccer tournament is an eagerly anticipated event for the Osizweni community at large. The tournament is the brainchild of TOTAL Osizweni service station dealer Kobus Dippenaar, a staunch football supporter who was concerned about the lack of family entertainment in the area during the festive season and saw such an initiative as an excellent platform for future soccer stars to showcase their talents.
TOTAL South Africa has been a beacon of hope for the unsponsored teams in Newcastle and surrounding areas, which get a financial boost through their participation in the games. They are assisted with the registration of their teams and players and also with the traveling expenses. The incentives given out by TOTAL South Africa have created and generated interest in the competition and as a result, other teams have requested that the number of entries be increased from 32 to 64 teams participating in the tournament.
The tournament is meant to enrich the community and bring them together. What is most valuable though is that it provides recreational activity and a platform for the youth of this community, keeping them off the streets whilst allowing those with talent on the field to be groomed and recognized for their skill and giving them something valuable and rewarding to do with their time. Historically, Newcastle has great soccer talent as quite a number of soccer players in A - Division clubs and the national squad, come from Newcastle. The tournament promises sustainability as shown by the number of people who attended the event and by the fact that generally most black communities in South Africa have a passion for soccer.
